This is an authentic Navajo Indian Chunk Coral Pendant in a stunning and unusual Sterling Silver setting. This is a striking Pendant by Navajo Charles Johnson and signed "Charles Johnson - sterling". The craftsmanship of Charles is very evident.<p> The use of turquoise, shell, jet and coral as personal adornment by Southwestern Indians dates from prehistoric times and the use of Silver by the Navajo is almost 100 years old. Size is 1" wide by 2-1/4" in length (including bale).<p> Coral is one of a few gemstones of organic origin. Coral is the skeletal remains of marine animals called coral polyps. Colonies of these tiny creatures build branching structures as they grow, gradually forming reefs and atolls. Most precious coral is found in warm waters. This deep red coral is found in the Mediterranean Sea. The oldest known findings of red coral date from the Mesopotamian civilization, i.e. from about 3000 BC. Believed to bring protection, coral was given as a gift by parents to their young children . Mohs Hardness: 3-4.<p>
